About this role

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is filling Chief Executive Officer posts at several hospitals and health centres across the province. You would lead the management of one hospital and the clinics linked to it. Each post has its own reference number, so you must apply separately for each one you want.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and manage clinical and administrative support services, working with the hospital’s executive management team.
  • Draw up a strategic plan for the hospital that fits national, provincial, regional and district health plans.
  • Manage the hospital’s finances, including income collection, budgeting, asset and risk management.
  • Oversee human resources, staff development, performance monitoring and workplace health and safety.
  • Run a fair and cost-effective procurement system that follows the PFMA.
  • Guide clinical and corporate governance, facility maintenance and preparation for audits and inspections, including a clean audit.
  • Build partnerships with community structures, NGOs and other health partners, and take part in Operation Sukuma Sakhe.

What you need

  • Matric certificate (Grade 12).
  • A degree or advanced diploma in a health-related field.
  • A degree or diploma in health management, or a degree or advanced diploma in a management field.
  • Registration with the relevant professional council.
  • At least 5 years of relevant management experience in the health sector, or as a health service manager in a non-clinical health service environment.
  • A valid, unendorsed Code B driver’s licence (Code 08).
  • Knowledge of the National Health Act, the Public Finance Management Act, the Public Service Act and related regulations.
  • Strong leadership, strategic thinking, financial and change management, and people management skills.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills, and a focus on clients and service delivery.

Is this job for you?

This post suits an experienced health manager who has led a large, complex service. You should be comfortable with budgets, governance and staff leadership. You should also be ready to work with the community and with partners outside the hospital.

Tips before you apply

  • Get your Z83 form ready and make sure it is originally signed, initialled and dated. Forms on an old version will not be considered.
  • Write a detailed CV that shows each management post, the dates, and the size of the budget and team you led.
  • Ask your past employers for proof of your work experience, endorsed and stamped, so you can give it to the panel before any interview.
