About this role
Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) is looking for a Master Electrician to work in Christiana. The role keeps electrical substations, traction power supplies and transmission lines reliable so that trains can run safely and on time.
What you’ll do
- Find and investigate electrical faults at substations and signal supply points, then repair them based on the approved maintenance programme or instructions from the central electrical control office.
- Service and maintain high voltage circuit breakers, high speed breakers, transformers and rectifier equipment. Spot leaks, damage and malfunctions, and decide whether action is needed now or later.
- Check earthing on current and voltage transformers, inspect the 3kV DC busbar and under-voltage relays, and look after batteries and battery chargers.
- Handle emergency call-outs for breakdowns and equipment failures, including fault finding on telecontrol equipment and PLC-based systems.
- Carry out high and medium voltage joining and termination, install 11kV and 25kV auxiliary transformers, and string substation flying busbars.
- Complete pre-trip inspections on vehicles, equipment and lifting gear, keep tools and materials safe, and write reports for your Technical Supervisor.
What you need
- Grade 12 or N3.
- Trade test certificate (red seal).
- At least 5 years’ experience as an artisan.
- Working at heights certification.
- All OBML modules completed.
- Valid code B driver’s licence, and willingness to drive the company vehicle.
- Passed the 6.6kV and 11kV AC course, or the Electrical Power Systems course (3 months).
- Passed training on 3kV DC, 25kV AC, 50kV AC (electrical traction systems) and the Electrical Power Systems course.
- Red/brown certificates for 6.6kV AC, 11kV AC, 25kV AC, 50kV AC and 3kV DC.
- Good physical fitness, medical fitness and good visual acuity.
- Advantageous: knowledge of Act 85 safety rules, SANS 3000-4, SABS 0142 wiring standards, and high voltage safety instructions.
- Advantageous: skills in schematic diagram reading, fault finding, root cause analysis, report writing and first aid or fire fighting.
Is this job for you?
This job suits a qualified, experienced artisan who enjoys hands-on high voltage work and can stay calm during breakdowns. You should be safety-minded, able to work under pressure, and comfortable taking responsibility for your own work and equipment.
Tips before you apply
- Have certified copies of your red seal trade test, matric or N3 certificate, and all training and red/brown certificates ready to upload.
- List each high voltage voltage level and equipment type you have worked on, with the number of years of artisan experience for each.
