About this role

Transnet Pipelines in Ladysmith needs two Master Installation Electricians. You will work with the Operations, Instrumentation and Mechanical teams to keep electrical equipment safe and running for the transport of petroleum products.

What you’ll do

  • Inspect electrical installations at regular intervals and issue certificates of compliance under the National Codes and the OHS Act.
  • Carry out compulsory hazardous area equipment inspections and keep depot certificates and compliance records up to date.
  • Guide and oversee electrical installation work, and make sure the right electrical equipment is used on site.
  • Run preventative maintenance on motors, control gear and trip protection equipment, and report defects.
  • Find and repair faults on live equipment, reading schematics and test results as you work.
  • Plan and carry out the removal, refurbishment and replacement of equipment, then test it to the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Obtain authorisation for, and carry out, switching and earthing on high voltage equipment up to 132 kV, and issue work and test permits.
  • Handle admin tasks such as job cards, defect and inspection reports, hot work permits and SAP entries. You may also act as Electrical Supervisor when needed.

What you need

  • Trade Test Electrical (3 years).
  • At least 3 years of technical or electrical on-the-job experience, including 3 years at Transnet Pipelines.
  • Registration as a Master Installation Electrician with the Department of Labour, or the ability to complete the required accreditation and training to get it.
  • Knowledge of all electrical equipment on Transnet Pipelines, enough to work on your own.
  • High Voltage safety instructions (A-Brown).
  • SAP Plant Maintenance course (MM and IM modules) and basic computer skills in Word and Excel.
  • Code 8 driver’s licence and Wireman’s licence.
  • Explosion Protection for Plant Maintenance Technicians (electrical and instrumentation).
  • Knowledge of testing instruments such as Megger and Thumper.
  • Knowledge of Code of Practice 29 and basic OHS Act knowledge.
  • Advantageous: NOSA safety course, fire fighting, oil spill course, First Aid Level 2, Rotork actuator course, electrical motor course, HT transformer course, confined spaces, and the basic crossings and cathodic protection course.
  • Advantageous: leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving and root cause analysis skills.

Is this job for you?

This job suits a qualified electrician who has spent years on industrial or pipeline equipment. You should be comfortable working on live equipment and high voltage switchgear, and taking responsibility for safe work. Strong safety habits and clear reporting matter as much as technical skill.

Tips before you apply

  • Have your trade test certificate, Wireman’s licence, Code 8 licence and any high voltage or SAP certificates ready as scanned copies.
  • Show your years of electrical experience on your CV, and name the equipment types you have worked on, such as motors, actuators and HT switchgear.
  • List the courses on your CV with dates, and say where you did the practical on-the-job work for each one.
