About this role

Sappi is hiring a Process Operator Dry End for its Newsprint Dry End section at Ngodwana. The job is about running the dry end of the paper machine safely and efficiently, so that output and paper quality stay high and downtime stays low.

What you’ll do

  • Run and watch the dryer section, calendar stack, Pope reel, repulpers and control panels to keep production steady.
  • Check paper for faults such as dirt, creases, ridges, rope marks and wet streaks. Measure reel density, hardness and caliper, and report anything out of spec.
  • Thread the paper tail from the first dryer section onto the Pope reel, do reel turn-ups and clear paper jams during breaks.
  • Check dryer screens, ropes and separators, and keep their tension, guiding and condition right.
  • Adjust draws and coordinate changes in basis weight, trim and speed with the Process Controller and Winder Operator.
  • Carry out shift inspections, help with felt and wire changes, fit dryer screens during shutdowns and use overhead cranes safely.
  • Follow HSEQ procedures and Best Operating Practices, and report accidents, unsafe conditions, fire hazards and equipment defects straight away.

What you need

  • Matric (Grade 12) with Maths and Physical Science, or N3 Pulp and Paper.
  • One to three years of relevant machine operating experience.

Is this job for you?

This job suits someone who has worked on a paper machine or similar process plant and likes hands-on work. You should be careful with safety and comfortable checking product quality on every shift.

Tips before you apply

  • Have your matric certificate or N3 Pulp and Paper results ready to upload.
  • List your machine operating experience by employer, machine type and years, and describe the dry end tasks you have done.
  • Show any safety training, shift work or quality checking you have done, using clear examples.
