About this role
Sappi is hiring a Winder Operator KLB to join the Winder team at its Ngodwana site. Sappi makes sustainable woodfibre products for markets around the world. The role helps the team hit its production targets while keeping paper quality where it should be.
What you’ll do
- Record paper production on the Product Tracking System (PTS) and log roll set data on the Metso system, following the production schedule.
- Check paper quality at the pope and winder. Use Papermap reports for mass and moisture, and Autoline results for other properties. Report any problems to the Winderman and Shift Superintendent.
- Update paper status on the PTS with the Shift Superintendent. Make sure each reel goes to the agreed decision: Pass, Cull or Recovery.
- Mark reels that need retesting as “On Hold”, send samples to the laboratory and pass the results to the Shift Superintendent.
- Cut jumbo sets neatly, secure loose web ends, apply cover tape and barcodes, and inspect finished reels for winding faults such as creases and soft edges.
- Record the correct Cull codes for rejected paper, update reel statuses for winding defects, and make sure trial reels are marked correctly.
- Help the Winderman with start-up preparation, jumbo preparation after turn-up and general housekeeping. Operate the overhead crane to load reels onto the unwind stand, and support maintenance shutdowns, including rope changes.
What you need
- Matric (Grade 12) with Maths and Physical Science, or an N3 in Pulp and Paper.
- At least one year of relevant manufacturing experience in the pulp and paper industry.
- Advantageous: experience in a paper machine environment.
- A strict commitment to safety procedures when you work with equipment and machinery.
Is this job for you?
This job suits someone who has a matric or N3 in pulp and paper and has already worked in a paper mill.
