Back End Developer

About this role

VKB Group, an agricultural company with its head office in Reitz, Free State, is looking for a Back End Developer. You will design, build and maintain the server-side applications, APIs and databases that power front-end systems. Most solutions are built on the .NET ecosystem.

What you’ll do

• Design, build and maintain server-side applications in C# using .NET Core or .NET Framework.
• Build and use RESTful APIs, and integrate them with client-facing applications together with front-end developers.
• Work with SQL Server and other databases to design schemas, tune queries and manage data.
• Put authentication, authorisation and data security practices into your code.
• Write unit and integration tests, and review code to keep quality high.
• Take part in the full development lifecycle, from design through deployment and monitoring.
• Look into application performance issues and fix production problems.
• Work with business teams, analysts and QA engineers, and follow Agile/Scrum methods.

What you need

• Matric, plus an IT Diploma or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field. Equivalent practical experience is accepted.
• 5+ years of back-end development experience (desired).
• Strong C# skills and solid knowledge of .NET Core / .NET Framework.
• Experience with Entity Framework / EF Core or a similar ORM.
• Strong understanding of SQL Server, including queries, stored procedures and optimisation.
• Familiarity with RESTful API design and integration.
• Knowledge of asynchronous programming, multithreading and concurrency in .NET.
• Experience with DevOps tools, Git or another version control system.
• Solid grasp of software design principles such as SOLID, OOP and layered architecture.
• Experience with jQuery, Bootstrap or similar front-end tools.
• Reading and writing English and/or Afrikaans. Other languages are an advantage.
• Resident in South Africa (required).
