The General Miner is under the supervision of the Environmental Engineering department and has the duty of organizing, coordinating, and safely carrying out ventilation maintenance, construction, and other associated projects.
The person currently in the position will oversee a team responsible for carrying out daily maintenance tasks in a safe and cost-effective manner, while ensuring full compliance with operational standards and MHSA regulations.
Minimum prerequisites:
Completion of twelfth grade or attainment of an equivalent level of education Achievement at NQF Level 4 Certification in Blasting
A minimum of 3 years of experience in a high-level gold mine, specifically in the maintenance and construction of mine ventilation systems.
To be eligible for employment, the applicant must undergo a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre to determine their fitness for the position and environment.
Additionally, they must successfully pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test and any other tests deemed necessary to evaluate their suitability for the job.
Core Skills:
An adept safety manager with the ability to oversee the ventilation construction team and execute safety initiatives within their designated jurisdiction.
Experienced and skilled leader of teams and individuals
Proficient in fostering effective collaboration both within and between teams
Proficiency in fostering collaboration and enhancing group synergy
Proficient in English for business and instructional purposes, encompassing speaking, interpreting, and writing skills.
Possess fundamental understanding of building regulations and requirements in order to construct ventilation doors, seals, refuge bays, cooling installations, and other related components. Demonstrate well-developed skills in planning, decision making, and problem-solving to ensure timely completion of tasks.
Tasks and Obligations:
Engage in and take charge of daily and planned initiatives promoting safety, health, environmental, and risk management.
Ensure that teams consistently exhibit safe work practices.
Ensure the effective implementation of established health and safety protocols for oneself and team members.
Promptly address any deviations from these standards and procedures within one’s area of responsibility.
Regularly attend and actively engage in daily team briefing sessions and Invocoms as necessary to strategize, receive, and delegate daily instructions regarding safety, risk assessment, and work schedules.
Oversee, guide, and cooperate with teams to perform necessary task risk assessments, develop safe work task plans, and plan for task and job materials and equipment.
Ensure adherence to safety standards and performance specifications by conducting regular Planned Task Observations (PTOs) to monitor and enforce disciplined work and team conduct. Take necessary corrective actions and measures as needed.
Guarantee the preservation of secure working environments for teams and areas of responsibility by performing workplace inspections regularly during the shift.
Take necessary measures or escalate issues as needed to uphold safe conditions in the workplaces.
Ensure that the daily tasks related to ventilation are effectively communicated and comprehended by all members of the team, and take necessary actions to uphold the secure achievement of all objectives.
