The (in-service training/ Vacwork) Intern role within the Student Management Programme (SMP) is designed to provide structured, practical workplace experience to students pursuing careers in the construction and built environment sector. The role aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry application by equipping interns for workplace readiness through mentorship.
Participate in structured rotations across various departments, including:
Site Engineering
Quantity Surveying
Site Supervision (Foremen)
Estimating
Site Administration
Gain practical exposure to construction processes, systems, and project execution
Mentorship & Learning
Work under the supervision of an assigned mentor
Actively engage in mentorship sessions and apply feedback
Develop a broad understanding of multidisciplinary project environments
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain an accurate and up-to-date training logbook, detailing:
Daily activities
Skills acquired
Learning outcomes
Ensure all documentation is reviewed and signed off by mentors
Performance Management
Participate in ongoing performance evaluations based on:
Technical competence
Work ethic and professionalism
Teamwork and collaboration
Contribute to formal assessment processes and feedback sessions
Professional Conduct & Development
Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and accountability at all times
Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety standards
Engage in continuous personal and professional development
Programme Participation & Career Development
Participate in programme-related activities, including:
Presentations (e.g., bursary or end-of-year assessments)
Feedback sessions and evaluations
Align personal development goals with organisational objectives
Work towards potential permanent employment opportunities within the organisation
Student needs to be currently enrolled in or recently completed a qualification in:
Construction Management
Civil Engineering
Quantity Surveying
Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
Geomatics or a related field
No prior formal work experience required
Valid Driver’s License and own transport (Advantageous, but not required)
Basic understanding of construction industry practices and principles
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Good interpersonal and teamwork abilities
Problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, site-based environment
Willingness to learn and take initiative
Basic administrative and reporting capabilities
