About this role
Hire Resolve is a South African security communications company. It designs, makes and supports GSM/LTE communicators, alarm panels and related software. This Durban-based role is for a hands-on engineer who will look after embedded firmware from design through to maintenance.
What you’ll do
- Design, build and maintain firmware in C/C++ for small, resource-limited ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
- Develop and tune communication drivers and stacks, including GSM/LTE, UART, SPI and I2C, so alarm signals and two-way messages stay reliable.
- Work with software teams on over-the-air (OTA) updates, cloud back-end links and device provisioning.
- Support board bring-up, schematic reviews, debugging and design-for-manufacture work with the hardware team.
- Build in diagnostics, logging, watchdog timers, error recovery and low-power features.
- Run unit, field and production tests, and do root-cause analysis on complex faults in the field.
- Lead code reviews, set coding standards, keep technical documents up to date and mentor junior engineers.
- Make sure your work meets South African regulatory rules from ICASA and follows security protocols.
What you need
- 8 or more years of professional embedded firmware or software development experience.
- Strong C/C++ skills on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, or similar devices.
- Proven experience with an RTOS (such as FreeRTOS) or bare-metal development.
- Deep hands-on experience with cellular modems (GSM, 2G, 3G, LTE), AT command sets and RF communication.
- Experience with UART, SPI, I2C and DMA peripherals.
- Hands-on use of hardware debugging tools such as JTAG/SWD, logic analysers and oscilloscopes.
- Working knowledge of Git, CI/CD pipelines and structured build systems.
- A B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
- Advantageous: background in alarm panels, telemetry or security products, including Contact ID protocols.
- Advantageous: experience designing secure OTA update systems and low-power or battery-backed devices.
- Advantageous: Python scripting for automated testing and tools.
- Advantageous: familiarity with ICASA radio compliance and regulatory processes.
